Perry was born in Chicago to two actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Perry made her debut in the television screen in the role of Jackie Harris, a character which was played by her mother in the ABC sitcom Roseanne. The parents of her didn't want her to take on acting roles until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry states that she did not want to become an actor during high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity during her time at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. The feeling of homelessness, however, brought her to California and she returned to work in the stage. Perry starred with her mother on stage in The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. Perry was in the show with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in nine episodes of the ABC crime thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry had a minor role on the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. The same year the actress was selected to play a young character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger character of her mom's role. The part was offered to her through audition, even though she was a cousin to the character.
